Architectural practice and approach

Robert Birbeck Architect is an RIBA Chartered Practice established in 2003 and offering a personal and design-led service for all stages of architectural projects in London. A branch office in south Devon provides similar services.

The range of work undertaken has included residential, educational and leisure projects, refurbishments and new builds. Clients are private individuals, developers, local authorities and housing charities.

Much of the work is on listed buildings, and although the practice designs in a contemporary manner, conservation principles are followed when working on historic properties.

The practice has links to associated professionals, builders and specialists and is happy to provide initial advice by telephone or e-mail.

Prior to starting his architectural practice, Robert Birbeck worked for 20 years on a variety of prestigious architectural projects in the capital, including site based and managerial roles.

He has also worked as an archaeological surveyor in Italy and France, acted as an architectural tour guide and contributed articles to architectural magazines.

He is a member of the Green Register and is particularly interested in the reuse of existing buildings, the shared characteristics of 'green' and traditional means of construction and how they might be used in a contemporary setting.

Recently completed projects, as of spring 2023, include a detached new-build house in north London and a major extension and loft conversion to a house in west London.
